Play today’s challengeWhy we built TravelGuessr
We have always loved that small jolt of curiosity you get from a great travel photo – the “wait, where is that?” moment. We wanted a way to feel it every day: something quick, free, and genuinely fun, that you could play on a coffee break without signing up for anything or installing yet another app.
So we made TravelGuessr. It is a daily travel geography game where you study a real photograph from somewhere in the world, then drop a pin on the place you think it shows. Four locations a day, a daily streak you keep alive by coming back each day, and a result you can share with friends. That is the whole idea, and we have tried hard to keep it that simple.
What makes it different
If you have played GeoGuessr, TravelGuessr will feel familiar – but we have taken it in our own direction:
- Real travel photography, hand-picked. You are looking at actual photos of real places, not endless panned-out Street View. Every location is chosen for a reason.
- A daily challenge, not an endless feed. Four rounds a day, then you are done. It is a small ritual that respects your time rather than a feed that wants your whole afternoon.
- The same challenge for everyone. Every player gets the exact same four locations each day, so you can go head to head with friends and players around the world and see who really guessed best.
- Completely free, with no account. No sign-up, no paywall, no install. Just open it and play.
- Made to be shared. Finish your day, share your score, and challenge a friend – a bit like Wordle, but for places.
Spin the globe
Remember being little and spinning the globe on a desk or a bookshelf – giving it a push, watching the whole world blur past, then stopping it with one finger to see where you landed? That is the feeling we wanted back. When it is time to guess, you do not click on a flat, distorted world map. You place your pin on a real, interactive globe that you can spin, tilt and zoom.
And it does not stop at countries and coastlines. You can keep zooming all the way down to street level – close enough to drop your pin on a town square, a rooftop or a stretch of beach just a few metres across. It makes guessing feel less like a quiz and more like actually finding a place on Earth, and it is honestly just satisfying to play with.
A little daily escape
Some days you will nail the location. Other days a photo will send you somewhere you had never even heard of – and that is our favourite part. TravelGuessr is a tiny daily escape: a few minutes to wander the planet, recognise a skyline, second-guess a coastline, and quietly add another spot to your someday-travel list. If it nudges you to look up a place and dream a little, we have done our job.
What we believe
Good games respect your time. They should be easy to start, friendly to everyone, and free of the clutter that gets in the way of the fun. We would rather make one beautiful daily ritual than a noisy app that wants your attention all day. And we believe the world is full of places worth being curious about – so we built something that celebrates them.
How we choose the photos
Every location is curated by hand. We look for photos that are fair to guess but full of clues – the architecture, the landscape, the light, the little details that hint at where on Earth you are. We aim for real variety too, so you are not always landing in the same handful of famous cities. The world is much bigger than its postcards.
How it works
The short version: study the photo, place your guess on the globe, and score points based on how close you are. Want the full walkthrough? Read the how to play guide.
Who’s behind it
TravelGuessr is made by Avionista AB, a small independent studio. We also build the word games Thirdle and Swapdle. We are players first, and we read every piece of feedback that comes in.
Frequently asked questions
- How is TravelGuessr different from GeoGuessr?
- TravelGuessr is a free daily challenge built around real, hand-picked travel photography rather than endless Street View. You get four fresh locations every day, you place each guess on an interactive globe, and you can share your result and compare it with other players. It is meant to be a couple of relaxed minutes a day, not a marathon.
- Is TravelGuessr free?
- Yes, completely. There is nothing to buy and no account to create. Open the site and today’s challenge is waiting for you.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Your streak and stats are kept on your own device, so you can just start playing. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to remember.
- How often are new photos added?
- Every single day. There are four new locations to guess each day.
- How does scoring work?
- Each guess is scored on distance – the closer your pin lands to the real location, the more points you earn, up to a perfect 5,000 points per round. With four rounds each day, a flawless day is worth 20,000 points. Land right on the spot and you max it out; the further away you are, the fewer points you take home.
- How do streaks work?
- TravelGuessr is built around a daily habit, and your streak is the count of days you have played in a row. To keep it alive you need to come back and finish the day’s challenge every single day – miss a day and your streak resets to zero and starts again from one. There is always a fresh set of locations waiting, so the trick is simply to keep showing up.
- Can I see how other players guessed?
- Yes. Once you have completed all four rounds, you can see where you place compared with everyone else, so you can tell whether you beat the typical player or finished mid-pack. And if you tap the others’ guesses button, the map shows where other players dropped their pins for each location. We also show their average score per round next to your own.
- Will you add more languages?
- Yes. The game already runs in many languages, and we keep adding more. If you would like to see TravelGuessr in your language, please let us know.
Got an idea or found a place we should add? We would love to hear from you – send us your feedback.
